Fans eager for the upcoming revival ofToeJam and Earl: Back In The Groovewill have to wait a little bit longer, according to a new video from Adult Swim Games. The funk-filled series revival had long been slated for a 2017 release, and until now Adult Swim had remained mum on ifToeJam and Earlmight just make a holiday shopping window appearance. In a new cinematic trailer featuring the voice of Epic Voice Guy Jon Bailey, however, the transition to a 2018 release window has become official.

The game has come a long way since itsurpassed its Kickstarter goalthree years ago, securing just over half a million dollars in funding.Back In The Grooveis poised to expand on the unapologetically strange and delightfully funky platform that its predecessors have created. The first game of the series was a 1991 cult hit for the Sega Genesis, and it helped pioneer ideas like procedural world generation, which have become much more commonplace in modern game design.

It was almost a year ago thatToeJam and Earlcreator Greg Johnson confirmed that the game would be making its way to theNintendo Switch, a decision that undoubtedly increased the development time of the series. In a recent Kickstarter update, Johnson took it upon himself to explain the delay of the game:

Game development is an inexact science and it’s our priority to deliver the best, most solid game we can. To get the game across the finish line we need to push into 2018, but rest assured we are working our butts off and you guys are going to get an awesome game.

Gamers hungry to dip their toes into the nostalgic franchise can still pick up some of theearlier titles on Steam, but those waiting forBack In The Groovewill need to welcome the new year before the game goes gold. Johnson couldn’t narrow down exactly when in 2018 the game will release, so gamers could feasibly be in for another 12 months of waiting.

ToeJam and Earlis now expected to release in 2018 for PC, PS4, Linux, Mac, Switch, and Xbox One.
