Wednesday’s creators have explained toScreenRantwhy season 2 has doubled down on the divisive romance element from season 1. The first part ofWednesday’s sophomore season will hit Netflix on June 13, 2025, officially continuing the titular Addams character’s time at Nevermore Academy. The trailer for these episodes has also teased the return of some keyWednesdaycharacters.
Among those returning forWednesdayseason 2is Hunter Doohan’s Tyler, who was Wednesday’s prospective love interest in season 1. The fact that thisAddams Familycharacter found herself at the center of a love triangle was a subject of criticism when these episodes initially premiered. However, it appears thatWednesdayseason 2 will continue to lean into the chemistry between Tyler and Wednesday.

During an interview withScreenRant,Wednesdaycreators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough discussed the romance angle in season 2. Millar stated that “the teen experience generally involves romance and exploring that aspect of life,” going on to explain what a reluctant trip down the romantic path meant for Wednesday’s character. “It felt like that was the right way to handle that area of the show and era of teen life,” Millar said.
Read Millar’s full comment about romance inWednesdayseason 2 below:
Miles Millar: Romance feels very much part of the teenage world, right? The teenage experience generally involves romance and exploring that aspect of life. Wednesday had been so burnt in season 1. Obviously, she fell in love and had wandered down the romantic path reluctantly with Tyler, and then got the shock of her life when he was discovered to be a Hyde and a monster who was responsible for these murders. She’s definitely closed that door, and it feels like that’s what she should do. But that said, when she gets back and eventually confronts and encounters Tyler in his cell at Willow Hill, there’s something there. They have chemistry, and Tyler speaks to it and calls her out on it. I think there’s something there. On Tyler’s side, he definitely holds a flame for Wednesday, and he doesn’t let her forget that. And those actors, Hunter and Jenna, have incredible chemistry together, so we love those scenes. There’s that happening, but the other kids are also exploring that avenue. It felt like that was the right way to handle that area of the show and era of teen life.
What Wednesday’s Teen Romance Means For Season 2
Wednesday Season 2 Will Keep This Element Going
Wednesdayisn’t a typicalAddams Familyadaptation. It falls more firmly within the teen-drama genre, which comes with its own set of tropes. Typically, romance is a frequent element in series like this, andWednesdayfell right in line. However, a love triangle wasn’t pivotal to Wednesday’s development. With Tyler locked up and Xavier written out ofWednesdayseason 2, the series could have left this all behind.
Still, Millar’s comments about the romance inWednesdayand the chemistry between Doohan’s Tyler and Ortega’s Wednesday could have intriguing implications for the coming installment. Season 1 revealed that Tyler was abused and manipulated, leaving his true feelings and agency in question. IfWednesdayseason 2 explores this further, it could solve old mysteries while continuing the established themes ofWednesdayseason 1.

Our Take On Wednesday Season 2’s Romance Element
Wednesday Couldn’t Have Ignored Wednesday & Tyler’s Story
Ortega previously teased thatWednesdayseason 2would have less romance than season 1. Millar’s comment doesn’t contradict this statement entirely, since it sounds as if Wednesday and Tyler’s chemistry won’t be central to the upcoming episodes. Instead, the pair may just be forced to acknowledge that therewas, in fact, something real between them.
Whether Wednesday and Tyler’s chemistry leads to anything further remains to be seen. Despite the divisiveness of their romance, I’m personally relieved to see that it will be, at the very least, acknowledged during Wednesday and Tyler’s meeting at Willow Hill. Teen romance drama isn’t without its appeal, and that added supernatural flair is something I’ll eagerly consume inWednesdayseason 2.
