The first trailer forPeacemakerseason 2 is now out, and I believe that it shows the perfect way for how theDC Universecould explain John Cena’s TV show moving from the DCEU toJames Gunn’s DCU. As Gunn previously said,Peacemakerseason 1 was the biggest release ever for Max, which is why I always expected the show to survive the end of the old DCEU. Aside from theJustice League’s finale cameo,Peacemakerseason 1 largely stands on its own.
With DC’s upcoming projects existing in the new DCU,Peacemakerseason 2will have to explain how Cena’s Christopher Smith and the rest ofPeacemaker’s talented castmake the jump to the DCEU.The multiverse always seemed like the easiest explanationto show how the characters now exist in the DCU, but since the franchise is just starting, I did not expect the multiverse to be used so soon. However, my newPeacemakerseason 2 theory after the trailer was released explains how the door is open for the perfect multiverse story.

The Peacemaker Season 2 Trailer Teased A Multiversal Story
The New DC Universe Has To Explain How The Show Survives A Universe Change
While we knewPeacemakerseason 2 would feature Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr., connecting the show to the DCU’s first two releases,Creature CommandosandSuperman, there were quite a few surprises in the firstPeacemakerseason 2 trailer.Peacemakerseason 2 continues the overall storyline of the first season, with John Cena’s Christopher Smith having saved the world from the butterflies. That leads him totry to join Maxwell Lord’s Justice Gang, and I was surprised by how deeply rooted in the DCU season 2 is.
Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern Guy Gardner and Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl both appear inPeacemakerseason 2. However, despite that clear connection to the DCU, the trailer’s ending is the most interesting part of the footage for Cena’s DCU story. We seetwo versions of Peacemaker share the screen, with one in full superhero suit pointing a gun at an underwear-wearing Christopher Smith. I’m convinced those will be the DCU and DCEU versions of Peacemaker, respectively.

James Gunn Has Addressed How The Different Universes Play Into Peacemaker Season 2
The DCU Series Has An Important Job To Pull Off
Given how the events ofThe Suicide Squad, which is a DCEU movie, are crucial toPeacemaker’s story, there was a lot of talk about how the show could be moved to the new DC Universe and still retain its key elements. Well, given how the animatedCreature Commandosseamlessly weaved the death of Rick Flag Sr.’s son into the plot, I have no doubtPeacemakerseason 2 will do a great job of merging both franchises. It also helps thatJames Gunn has a planfor that.
In January 2024,Gunntook to Threads to answer a fan’s worries about howPeacemakerseason 2 being set in a different universe could be confusing for those who watched season 1. According to the DC Studios creative chief, there is no reason to worry.Gunn revealed he has “a way in” that will guarantee the story makes sense. While Gunn did not mention the multiverse as the plot device he would use, I have a dark theory forPeacemakerseason 2 after watching the trailer, and it would explain the universe change with a twist.

Peacemaker Season 2 Theory: John Cena’s DC Hero Kills Himself
A Key Location From Season 1 Returns With A Crucial Role
ThePeacemakerseason 2 trailer shows two versions of John Cena’s Christopher Smith confused as they meet for the first time. I believe the multiverse is in play here rather than time travel, as the version of Peacemaker who has a gun sports a new helmet and, most importantly, the dove emblem on his chest is facing upwards.
InPeacemakerseason 1, Smith’s suit emblem was inverted, with the dove looking down. I’m convinced that is a subtle tease about the different universes.InPeacemakerseason 1, we learned that Smith’s father had built a pocket dimension closet. In thePeacemakerseason 2 trailer, Cena’s DC character goes through a door there and seemingly arrives in a new universe, coming to meet another version of himself.

MyPeacemakerseason 2 theory is that the DCEU version of Chris has arrived in the DCU in the scene we see in the trailer, and he will kill his DCU self to take his place. That allows all his DCEU backstory to continue while setting Cena up for DCU adventures inPeacemakerseason 2 and beyond.
