Yes, we’ve had the newestCall of Dutygames join Game Pass, withModern Warfare 3 2023andBlack Ops 6on both PCand Xbox consoles, but the older titles haven’t received the same love. On June 30, 2025, Xbox announced thenewest games coming to Xbox Game Pass, and it included the first olderCODcoming to the service—Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.However, it’s the newMW2being added, not the original classic, which is a baffling choice.

Last year’s Xbox Games Showcase, which ended with theCall of Duty: Black Ops 6Direct, was met with a great deal of excitement fromCall of Dutyfans. I came out of the showcase unconvinced, however. Yes,Black Ops 6got announced as a day one Game Pass title, but I was baffledthat the olderBlack Opsgames didn’t get put on the service to seal the deal forCODfans.
The Xbox platform is the best place forCall of Duty, with extensive backward compatibility and player counts that frequently outdo the PC equivalents. The showcase was the perfect opportunity to highlight that concept, and I still think Xbox needs to do more to emphasize its status as the perfectCODdestination today. WhileBlack Ops 6’slaunch was a huge success, pumping up Game Pass’s numbers, it’s frustrating that there are no olderCODs.
There have been glimmers of hope recently, with everyCODappearing on the Windows PC storefront, and images showing"Included with Game Pass"have even appeared on the Windows PC store pages forWorld at WarandInfinite Warfare. Still, there wasn’t anything official until April 15, when Xbox announcedCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 2022was coming to Game Pass.

While the 2022 gameModern Warfare 2may not be everyone’s least favoriteCall of Duty, it’s frequently counted among the worst whenrankingCODgames. The newModern Warfare 2ruinedCOD’s famous movementby making it extremely slow, resulting in an experience that didn’t even feel like part of the franchise.
A strong campaign isn’t enough of a redeeming quality to saveModern Warfare 2.
The footsteps inModern Warfare 2were the loudest they’ve ever been, and that problem persists in the game today. DMZ was also pretty lackluster. To be fair, the campaign was incredible, but unfortunately, many are having issues accessing the campaign, including myself. For some reason,theMW2campaign file just disappearedfrom my installation on Xbox.
Regardless, a strong campaign isn’t enough of a redeeming quality to saveModern Warfare 2from being a disappointingCODgame.It’s frustrating that Xbox has chosen to make this game available on Game Pass rather than the originalModern Warfare 2, which has stood the test of time as a significantly better experience.

The Game That Defined A Generation
The original 2009Modern Warfare 2is one of the best FPS games of its generation, and it’s still fun to play today. The campaign was solid, Spec Ops was a great time with a friend, and the multiplayer shaped an entire generation of gamers. Sure, it was unbalanced, but that was the beauty of it. LikeMario Party, there’s fun in the chaos and madness of classicModern Warfare 2that none of the otherCall of Dutys replicate. I would love to play online multiplayer through Xbox Game Pass.
Sadly, I think the reason this game’s having a hard time coming to the service is that, at least for me, this game doesn’t work online anymore. I know other people have been able to play online through Xbox Series X|S, butevery single time I’ve booted it up, I can’t get in a match. I’ve gotten into matches in classicModern Warfare 3andBlack Ops 2,but I’ve had no luck withMW2.
Maybe I just keep trying to play when the servers are acting up, but Xbox should definitely fix that server when the time comes to drop it on Game Pass. It’s frustrating that Game Pass continues to ignore such a fantastic opportunity to grow the service. However, the various leaks indicate that, in time, all theCall of Dutygames should come to the service, and hopefully, they will come sooner rather than later.
